Welcome to Nightvale
Just a short one today: showing off my Halloween Costume. Welcome to Nightvale is the first podcast I ever listened to. Set in a desert town somewhere in the South West of the USA, WtN is presented as a local radio news broadcast. It has fictional segments for traffic, weather and the like with stories about library openings or Mayoral elections just like you'd expect. However every conspiracy theory, sinister plot or Lovecraftian horror is represented somewhere. Unidentified government agencies pull the strings in the town, a man in a tan skinned jacket is frequently up to unspecified activities and there is a frequent warning to not approach the librarians. Repeat, do not approach the librarians. In deadpan tones the radio host Cecil Palmer reports news about the faceless old woman who secretly lives in your house in exactly the same voice he would use to tell you about the opening of a school fayre.
The whole thing comes together for a very dark humour, and if you want to try an episode I recommend A Story Of You as a strong stand alone episode that won't spoil anything before it. Go on, it's Halloween, scare yourself. Best heard after dark.
Anyway, last year I was visiting one of my friends listening to some Nightvale episodes on the way. When I arrived his girlfriend said, "you've probably never heard of it, but there's this podcast called Welcome to Nightvale and you are dressed just like the main character." Being purely an audio medium I'd never seen what he looked like, but there is a large cult following on the internet that draw pictures of him and there seems to be a shared headcannon. After I quick Google I realised she was right and so for Halloween I've spent the last two days dressed like this:
